ComTac Downlead Headsets with Radio Connections
3M Peltor ComTacs provide active hearing protection and clear communications for military, law enforcement, and civilian shooters. Getting your comms right means understanding crucial setup and compatibility rules.

ComTac Downlead Headsets | What You Should Know
Active Hearing Protection
ComTac headsets use advanced environmental listening technology. They instantly compress loud sounds, such as gunfire. At the same time, they amplify low-level sounds like footsteps and voices, allowing you to maintain full situational awareness on the range or in the field.
Single and Dual Downlead Wiring
Routing your comms correctly is critical for team coordination. Single downlead models feature a single cable connecting to a single radio via a PTT adapter. Dual downlead models feature two separate cables, allowing you to route and monitor comms between two different radios simultaneously.
NIB (Natural In-Ear Behavior) Technology
Available on modern generations like the ComTac VI, NIB allows operators to communicate directly with each other in high-noise environments. It connects automatically when you are within close range of another NIB user, requiring no external radio or PTT to function.
Noise-Canceling Boom Microphones
Clear transmission is mandatory. ComTacs utilize specialized noise-canceling boom mics that filter out background wind, vehicle noise, and gunfire. This ensures your outgoing radio traffic is clearly understood by your team, regardless of your environment.
ComTac Headsets and Configurations
- Peltor ComTac VIII: The newest generation of tactical hearing protection. It features redesigned earcups and updated audio profiles to improve operators' spatial awareness in high-noise environments.
- Peltor ComTac VI NIB: These headsets feature Natural In-Ear Behavior (NIB) technology. This allows for headset-to-headset voice communication within close range, even without an external radio connected.
- Peltor ComTac V & XPI: The proven standard for reliable field communications. The ComTac V and XPI models offer upgraded omnidirectional microphones and are easily configured for single or dual downlead setups.
FAQs: ComTac Headsets and Radio Connections
What is the difference between 4-Pin and 5-Pin connections?
Standard tactical downleads typically use a NATO U-174 4-pin plug. Certain maritime or aviation setups use a 5-pin plug. Always check your Push-to-Talk (PTT) adapter to see which pin layout it accepts before buying.
How do I match my ComTacs to my specific radio model?
Your headset does not plug directly into your radio. You must connect your headset downlead to a PTT adapter, and that PTT must have the correct connector pinout for your exact radio model (such as a Motorola APX or Baofeng UV-5R).
Do I need a Single Comm or Dual Comm setup?
A single comm setup uses one downlead to connect to a single radio. A dual comm setup features two separate downleads, allowing an operator to connect to and monitor two radios simultaneously.
What is the difference between ComTacs with downleads and "Hearing Defenders"?
"Hearing Defenders" only provide hearing protection and electronic environmental listening; they do not include communication cables. ComTacs with downleads include external cables and boom microphones required for transmitting and receiving radio traffic.
